![]() It was when Zeus realized that soon all the humans would die because of Demeter killing off the abundance of the Earth, and they would have no more worship or sacrifices, that he finally stepped in. She appeared to Demeter and stated that she knew that the Earth had opened and Persephone had been taken underground, but she did not know much more, it was Hekate who suggested visiting Helios, for as he was the living embodiment of the Sun, he saw all that happened when the sun was in the sky! Helios revealed that it was Hades that had taken Persephone as his bride, and also Helios that explained that he had permission from Zeus to do so! Demeter was livid at Zeus and when he was unwilling to help, she let all of the plants on the Earth wither and die in her desperate longing to be reunited with her daughter. Over these long months of searching helplessly, no one seemed willing to help Demeter, except Hekate, who was moved by her tears. They banished Demeter, and caused her ire at their disrespect, as she revealed her Divine nature! She traveled far and wide in an attempt to find her child, in fact, one of her most significant events during this period was at Eleusis, where the Mysteries would one day take place in her and Persephone’s honor! In Eleusis, she became a nanny and caretaker of a household that had a young child, being a Goddess of Motherhood she wanted to protect the child, but was caught holding the child over the fire to make the child immortal, which horrified the parents when they saw this. It was not long before Demeter began her search and she wept as she searched hopelessly for her daughter. Meanwhile, Demeter was on Earth horrified by the abrupt disappearance of her beloved daughter. At this point, Kore’s name was changed to Persephone in honor of her new role as Queen of the Underworld, she was now a Goddess of both Fertility in her Spring aspect and the Dead in her Underworld Queen aspect. They were married, as Hades had already been granted Kore’s hand by her father and King of the Olympian Gods Zeus. Kore (which is Persephone’s original name before being Queen of the Underworld) was picking wildflowers in a field with her nymph handmaidens when the Earth opened up and Hades emerged in his chariot grabbing a hold of Kore and taking her into the Underworld to be his Queen. I always suggest reading as many variants of ancient myth and lore as possible to gain a greater understanding of the figures within the tale! Without further ado, let’s get to retelling the myth. I am going to retell the tale here, but know that this is one version of the story that I am retelling, and there are many variants out there. When we are learning about the Mysteries, the best way to ascertain what may have occurred is to look to the original myth of Persephone and the changing of the seasons. The Eleusinian Mysteries revolved around the Goddesses Persephone and Demeter, although Hades would have been acknowledged, it truly was rites centered in Goddess worship. When you get the chance to enter into a Mystery Cult ruled by Goddesses of Death, you get the chance to learn the secrets of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.Īnother thing that we know about the Mysteries is that the tale of Persephone’s abduction, marriage, and Demeter’s struggle to find her daughter were performed in a ritual dramatic performance during the events of the Mysteries. What is known is that the initiates go through two different initiations, with the lesser initiation taking place in the Spring and the greater initiation taking place in the Autumn. I have long said that if I ever got to join an ancient mystery cult, it would definitely be the Cult of Demeter and Persephone and the Eleusinian Mysteries!Īs I mentioned above, we know very little about exactly what the Mysteries entailed. ![]() ![]() This week’s Femme Fatale Friday post is going to be all about the Eleusinian Mysteries, at least the small amount of information that we know about it, since this was a true Mystery Cult, with its knowledge lost to history! The concept of learning the mysteries of death in order to remove the fear of the inevitability of death is fascinating to me. Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.
